The Cairo giants have been searching for a new coach since parting ways with Spanish boss Jose Riveiro by mutual consent on 31 August, following a poor start to their Egyptian Premier League campaign
Interim coach Emad El-Nahhas was appointed to take over in the meantime.
Thomasberg left his position at Midtjylland in August 2025, despite an impressive record of 9 wins and 4 draws from 13 games, with no losses.
The 50-year-old began his managerial career in 2008 with Midtjylland before stints at FC Hjorring and FC Fredericia in the Danish league.
He returned to Midtjylland for a second spell in 2023 and led the team through 115 matches across all competitions.
During his career, Thomasberg has won three trophies: the Danish Superliga title with Midtjylland, the Danish Cup with Randers FC, and the Danish 2nd Division title with Hobro IK.
The defending champions hope that the new coach help the team regain his form after their poor start.
Ahly sit in 8th place in the league, with 12 points from 7 matches, 5 points behind leaders Zamalek, who have played one more game.
They will face Zamalek in the Cairo derby on Monday.
