The reigning champions have bounced back well from a 2-0 defeat to Pyramids FC in Round 4, collecting nine points from their last three matches, including a morale-boosting 2-1 Cairo derby win over rivals Zamalek the previous weekend.
Under interim coach Emad El-Nahhas, Ahly have climbed to 15 points from eight matches and will be looking to strengthen their position before the upcoming international break.
Squad boost for depleted champions
Ahly’s preparations were boosted on Friday by the return of five key players to complete training: Taher Mohamed Taher, Mohamed Hani, Hussein El Shahat, Ahmed “Zizo” Sayed, and Mohamed Magdy Afsha, all of whom are available for selection pending final approval from the medical staff.
Ahly will be without Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet, who is serving a one-match suspension, while youngsters Mohamed Abdallah and Ahmed Abdeen are away on international duty with Egypt’s U20 team.
In total, the Red Devils are missing seven players due to suspension, illness, injury, and national team commitments. Striker Nejc Gradisar, absent from the derby due to a muscle strain, faces a late fitness test. The Slovenian has been in strong form this season and was recently named in his national squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Coaching uncertainty lingers
Ahly’s management continues negotiations with Danish coach Jess Thorup and club officials in Denmark.
Despite the managerial vacuum, El-Nahhas has steered the side effectively, drawing praise for tactical flexibility and player management amid mounting injuries.
Kahraba Ismailia out to avoid another defeat
Kahraba Ismailia, playing their maiden top-flight season, are still seeking their first league win and currently sit in the relegation zone. Their defensive setup will likely be tested by an Ahly side eager to exploit wide areas through the returning El Shahat and Bencherki.
