Ahly stated that Thorup has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the club, but did not disclose financial details.
However, Danish sports magazine Tipsbladet revealed that the deal is worth at least 60 million Danish kroner ($8.5m) net, making it one of the most lucrative coaching packages in African football.
The former FC Augsburg and FC Copenhagen coach is expected to bring his own backroom team, with up to five new staff members joining the club.
The appointment comes as Ahly seek to consolidate their dominance following the departure of Spanish coach José Riveiro after a series of poor results at the start of the season.
Thorup, 55, previously enjoyed a strong spell in Germany’s Bundesliga, guiding Augsburg to a club-record unbeaten run and several historic victories.
Ahly have recently regained their balance under interim coach Emad El-Nahhas, securing four successive league wins, including last week’s Cairo derby, to move level on 18 points with Masry and Zamalek at the top of the table.
The Reds currently sit third on goal difference behind Masry and Zamalek, respectively.
