The Cairo giants lead Group D with eight points, one ahead of fellow Egyptians Masry, while South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs are third. Zesco are bottom of the group without a point.

Zamalek are unbeaten in the competition so far, winning two matches and drawing two, and will be aiming to maintain that run in the secondary continental tournament.

“The game against Zesco United is an important step in Zamalek’s campaign in the Confederation Cup,” coach Motamed Gamal told a pre-match news conference.

“Zamalek prepared well for the game and our target is to win, then beat Kaizer Chiefs in the following match to finish top of the group and qualify for the next round which will make our path easier,” he added.

Zamalek is still struggling with injuries as over 10 players are missing including veteran playmaker Abdallah El Said, Captain Omar Gaber, Angolan winger Chico Banza, Brazilian attacker Juan Alvina Bezerra, international fullback Ahmed Fattouh, and midfielders Ahmed Rabea and Mahmoud Gehad.

However, Gamal relies on his solid defence line led by versatile and experienced defender Mahmoud "El Wensh" Hamdy and international keeper Mohamed Sobhy.

Despite the absences, Gamal said most of the injured players are expected to return within the next 10 days.

“Zesco have talented players, but they have been unlucky in their previous Confederation Cup matches,” Gamal said.
