Hardcore football fans of Zamalek football club, who are known as the Ultras White Knights, blocked a vital road on the outskirts of Giza on Wednesday, demanding the release of one of their colleagues who was arrested on Tuesday.
Ahmed Shobra, a leading member of the Ultras White Knights, was detained on charges of being involved in an attack on a news conference held by Egyptian sports minister El-Amry Farouk last week.
Farouk was forced to cancel the conference after dozens of Ultras White Knights members stormed the hall, one day after Zamalek's chairman Mamdouh Abbas accused the minister of being biased against his club.
Farouk was supposed to announce new regulations for football clubs, which would remain in force until 2020, and give a presentation on sports development plans.
Abbas, whose mandate should end at the end of May, accused Farouk of favouring arch-rivals Ahly after he decided to appoint a stop-gap board of directors to take charge of the club until September's elections.
Zamalek argue that the incumbent chairman should remain in charge of the club until a new board is elected but Farouk insists that he must leave immediately following the end of his term.
