Officials have announced that the Egyptian Premier League will be suspended for a week because of security concerns surrounding the upcoming anniversary of the 2011 revolution.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Monday that the sixth round of the domestic league was being suspended at the request of Egyptian security officials.
“Federation activity will be suspended from 21 January to 28 January,'' read a statement on the association’s official website on Monday.
It is the second delay for the domestic league, which started last December. The EFA postponed the fifth round last week, at the request of Egyptian security officials, because of the constitutional referendum.
The sixth round was scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Saturday sees the third anniversary of the start of the 2011 revolution. The Egyptian interior minister has called on Egyptians to congregate in public places in celebration of the anniversary, while pro-Muslim Brotherhood forces are planning public protests on the same day.
The Egyptian Premier League started in December after six months of suspension due to ongoing political turmoil following the July ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood’s president Mohamed Morsi.
