Egypt's U-23 side moved within touching distance of a place at the All-Africa Games after claiming a 2-0 victory away to Burundi in the first leg of the final qualifying round.
Ahly's in-form midfielder Mahmoud Hassan "Trezeguet" opened the scoring after five minutes and Zamalek winger Mostafa Fathi wrapped up the win on the stroke of halftime.
Egypt will be favourites to reach the All-Africa Games when they host Burundi in the second leg in Cairo.
The All-Africa Games will take place in Brazzaville, Congo from 3-18 September.
Egypt won the gold medal at the Games twice. They defeated Kenya in Nairobi in the 1987 final and beat Zimbabwe in Harare in 1995.
