Egypt's U-20 defender Rami Rabiea has pulled out of the squad for the World Cup after picking up a knee injury, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) said.
The Ahly centre back sustained the injury during his team’s 3-3 draw with Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League last week.
The EFA said they were surprised that Ahly did not inform that Rabiea was injured before he travelled with his Egypt teammates to Colombia.
“The technical staff has decided to allow Rabiea to return to Cairo to undergo treatment there after it realized that he won’t be able to participate in the World Cup,” the EFA said in a brief statement on their official website.
Egypt, whose best position was a third-place finish in the 2001 World Cup in Argentina, will open their campaign against four-time winners Brazil on 29 July.
They will also face Austria and Panama in Group E.
