EFA chairman Samir Zaher said on Friday he hopes Egypt’s U-20 team will maintain their superb run in the World Cup in Colombia when they meet Argentina in the knockout phase. The young Pharaohs qualified for the tournament’s round of 16 after finishing second in Group E with seven points, putting on some remarkable performances in the process. They held four-time winners Brazil to a 1-1 draw in their opener, defeated Panama 1-0 and crushed Austria 4-0, which strengthened their belief that they could challenge for the title.
“The players lived up to the expectations of Egyptian fans. I really admire their confidence, the way they play and their team spirit,” Zaher said on the EFA’s official website. “I hope that Egypt will maintain such great displays when they face Argentina on Tuesday.”
Egypt’s U-20 team will meet Argentina for the fourth time in a decade.
Argentina humiliated Egypt with a 7-1 group-stage win in 2001 before eliminating them two years later following a hard-fought 2-1 victory in round 16. Argentina also beat Egypt 2-0 in 2005, thanks to two goals from Lionel Messi and Pablo Zabaleta.
