Ahmed Magdy scored Egypt’s U-23 winner against Gabon in the opening game of the Olympic qualifiers

The young Pharaohs made the perfect start of the final phase of the 2012 London Olympic Games African qualifiers after beating Gabon 1-0 on Sunday.

Egypt’s and Ghazl El-Mahalla forward Ahmed Magdy scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute of the game to put Hani Ramzy’s men temporarily on top of group B as Ivory Coast and South Africa will play later on today.

Hossam Hassan sent Omar Gaber clear on the right flank to play a low cross for Magdy who shot from inside the box.

Wasteful-Egypt dominated the game but couldn’t capitalize on the host of chances created over the 90 minutes.

Minnows Gabon only reacted in the dying minutes of the game and managed to create some threat on Ahmed El-Shennawy’s nets.

The team will face Ivory Coast in the second round next Wednesday.
