Wigan Athletics' English-born midfielder Sam Morsy said he is confident he can play on a more regular basis under Egypt's new coach Javier Aguirre.

Morsy, who does not speak Arabic, made his Egypt debut under Aguirre's predecessor Hector Cuper in August 2016 and went on to make six more international appearances, the last of which came in the 2-0 win over eSwatini in an African Cup of Nations qualifier earlier this month.

"I believe I'm going to get a good chance after speaking to the manager on several occasions," the 27-year-old told Wigan's official podcast.

"International matches are always really exciting and I always feel refreshed when I come back.

"I've done it for a couple of years now and travelling is part and parcel of that commitment. It's a huge privilege, it doesn't last forever and whilst you play for your country you just have to give it your best shot."

Morsy was named in Egypt's squad for the upcoming Nations Cup qualifier at home to Tunisia on 16 November.

Egypt and North African rivals Tunisia are battling it out for top spot in Group J after they had already qualified for next year's Cameroon finals with two matches to spare.

"Qualifying was a brilliant feeling. We picked up two great results and it was a very good training camp because it was a good opportunity for me to meet the staff and the staff to meet me," Morsy added.

"It was a really positive camp. We've called up a lot of young players recently and the manager has revamped the squad, it's really positive times for Egypt."
