Adam El-Abd said he is proud after making his first ever international appearance in Egypt’s 2-1 friendly victory over a second-string Cameroon side on Sunday.

The 27-year-old, who was born to an Egyptian father and a British mother, came on as a second-half substitute, replacing Zamalek’s central defender Mahmoud Fathallah as Egypt prepare for their opening World Cup qualifier against Mozambique on 1 June.

“First taste of international football ended with victory over Cameroon,” El-Abd, who plays for English second-division side Brighton & Hove Albion, said on his Twitter account on Monday.

“Very proud to be part of the team and representing Egypt.”

El-Abd is expected to be included in Egypt’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Mozambique. The match will take place at the Egyptian Army Stadium in Borg El-Arab, Alexandria.

It remains to be seen whether the interior ministry would allow spectators to attend the game, given security concerns in the country in the wake of February’s Port Said disaster, which forced the cancellation of the Egyptian Premier League.
