The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has reappointed Shawky Gharib as the U23 national team head coach just a couple of months after he left his post following the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The nomination of Gharib for a third spell came upon the recommendation of the EFA technical manager Nelo Vingada.

Gharib's first stint was almost 20 years ago when he took over the U23 team after making his fame leading Egypt's U20 to the bronze medal of the 2001 World Championship U20. However, he failed to lead the team to the 2004 Olympic Games.

In 2018, Gharib was recalled to the job, leading the young Pharaohs to the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations and qualifying for the 2020 Olympics, where Egypt reached the quarterfinals only to lose to future champions Brazil.

The 62-year-old coach parted ways with the team following the games in August and will be hoping for a third-time-charm in Paris 2024.
