Smouha’s Mahmoud ‘Canaria’ Metwaly has been called on by Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to join Egypt’s national football team on Monday to replace injured playmaker Abdallah El-Said ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Gabon at home.

“Midfielder Canaria already joined the national team’s camp on Monday morning after medical scans revealed that Pyramids FC player El-Said wouldn’t be available for the Gabon game,” reads a statement by the Egyptian Football Association.

El-Said picked up a muscular strain in Friday’s away draw against Angola in the fifth round of the World Cup qualifiers.

Egypt recovered from being two goals down then equalised the match in Luanda to reach the World Cup qualifying playoff in March with one match to spare in Group F.

The Pharaohs, who are on the top of their group with 11 points, gained an unassailable four-point lead over second-placed Gabon, who defeated Libya 1-0 earlier on Friday.

The 22-year-old Canaria appeared with Smouha in the three league matches they played so far this season.
