The towering central defender picked up the injury during Egypt's clash against Morocco in the African Cup of Nations quarter-final on 30 January.

"Ahmed Hegazi is back to the club after finishing the first stage of his rehabilitation programme in Germany … he will fly to Germany again next week to start the second stage, which will last for six weeks," Ittihad said in a statement.

"Hegazi then will start the third stage, which will include physical and technical preparation before he gets back to action."

The 31-year-old will miss Egypt's crucial two-legged World Cup qualifying playoff against Senegal late in March.

Hegazi has been a key member of Ittihad's squad since joining from then English Premier League club West Bromwich in October 2020.

He has earned 78 caps with Egypt since making his debut in 2011, scoring two goals.
