Egypt team, skipper Salah in final shortlists for CAF awards

Liverpool star winger and Egypt skipper Mohamed Salah has been included with the national football team in the top-three final lists of nominees for the CAF awards 2022.

The African Football governing body, CAF, announced on Wednesday the top three for all the women and men categories ahead of Thursday’s anticipated Awards Gala in Rabat, Morocco.

According to CAF’s official website, former winners Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane of Egypt and Senegal will be competing for the men’s Player of the Year award with Senegal shot stopper Edouard Mendy who appears in the three-men list for the first time.

The 30-year old Salah has won the same prize twice before in 2017 and 2018.

2021 African Cup of Nations runners-up Egypt is also competing for National Team of the Year award alongside Cameroon and Senegal. Meanwhile the Pharaohs former coach Carlos Queiroz is competing for the coach of the year title alongside Senegal’s Aliou Cisse and coach of Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Walid Regragui.

Ahly competes for the best club

Cairo giants Ahly came also in the final list for the club of the year award alongside Morocco’s RS Berkane and Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco.

Ahly duo goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy and Malian striker Aliou Dieng are also competing for Interclub Player of the Year award {the best player playing inside Africa} with Wydad defender Achraf Dari.

Due to the absence of a major women’s competition during the period under review, the Organising Team for the CAF Awards 2022 has reviewed the selection process for this important category. The TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco will be factored as one of the criterion in deciding a winner befitting of the status of the award and women’s football in general. The winner will be announced on 23 July 2022 during the final match of the Women’s AFCON.
