“Medical scans have showed that Donga has suffered a knee cartilage injury during the national team preparatory camp that is taking place in Borg El-Arab Stadium in Alexandria,” read a statement by the EFA on Thursday.

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder joined Pyramids FC in July 2016 coming from second division side Beni Ebeid, scoring five goals in 171 appearances in all competitions.

He has played in eight games with the national team since first joining the Pharaohs in 2019, including two games in the Africa Cup of Nations that was hosted in Egypt that year.

Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria had chosen Donga among the preliminary 24-man squad of local-based players for the two friendly games.

The Pharaohs are set to play two friendly games later this month against Niger and Liberia on 23 and 27 September, respectively.

Vitoria is expected to announce the final squad for these two friendlies on 17 September after Zamalek and foreign based players join the camp.

The Pharaohs will also play another friendly against Belgium in November.
