Ahly, Zamalek players fly to London for Olympics

Player fly to London Olympics after Sunday's derby match in Cairo which saw Ahly beat Zamalek 1-0 in the African Champions League

Member of Egypt's Olympic squad who played in Sunday's Cairo derby between Ahly and Zamalek flew to London Monday ahead of the opening match with Brazil.

Ahly defeated Cairo foes Zamalek 1-0 in the second round of Group B of the CAF Champions League. Ahly stayed leaders of the group with six points while Zamalek remained bottom with zero points.

Ahly's Mohamed Abou-Treika, Emad Meteb and Ahmed Fathi, are the three permitted overage players in the Olympic squad. The remainder of the squad are 23-years-old or younger.

The four main players in coach Hany Ramzy’s squad are Zamalek’s goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawy and striker Omar Gaber, and Ahly’s midfielder Shehab Eldeen Ahmed and defender Saad Samir.

Egypt, who are returning to the prestigious tournament for the first time in 20 years, have been drawn in Group C with the formidable Brazil, Belarus and New Zealand teams.

Egypt play Brazil on Thursday.
