Ashour, who was initially included in the Pharaohs’ squad for the UAE camp, suffered a leg injury during Ahly's 3-1 victory over Ismaily in the Egyptian Premier League on Sunday.

“Medical scans have showed that Ashour suffers from a knock to his calf and he will soon recover from the injury,” Ahly’s doctor Ahmed Gaballah said after the game.

This marks the first call-up for 22-year-old Kouka to Egypt’s national team squad, whose impressive performances in the domestic competition with Ahly make him a suitable alternative for Ashour.

Egypt, who departed for the UAE on Monday, will undergo a training camp from 9 to 17 October as part of their preparations for the 2024 African Cup of Nations finals, scheduled to take place in Côte d'Ivoire in January 2024.

During the camp, Egypt will engage in two friendly matches, the first against Zambia on 12 October and the second against Algeria on 16 October.

Having already secured their place in the 2023 African Cup of Nations, Egypt will kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifiers campaign in November.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final is set to begin on 13 January 2024, with the final match scheduled for 11 February 2024.
