Egypt defender Hegazi rejoins Pharaohs camp ahead of Croatia match

Ahmed Abd El Rasoul , Tuesday 26 Mar 2024

Egyptian defender Ahmed Hegazi rejoined the Pharaohs' training camp ahead of Tuesday’s anticipated match against Croatia in the Capital Cup, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced early on Tuesday.

Egypt will be hosting Croatia, who finished third at the last World Cup, at Egypt Stadium in the New Administrative Capital in the tournament's final that belongs to FIFA Series 2024.

Hegazi, 33, left the camp and traveled to Saudi Arabia on Sunday due to sudden family matters after agreeing with coach Hossam Hassan to return before the final.

He missed the Capital Cup opening game, a 1-0 victory over New Zealand on Friday.

Hegazi, a seasoned player representing Ittihad Jeddah, has accumulated 88 appearances with the Egyptian national team, including three matches in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where the Pharaohs were eliminated in the group stage.

The victory over New Zealand is a good boost for coach Hassan in his debut especially as Egypt's 2026 World Cup qualifiers campaign will begin on 3 June.

The campaign will start with a home match against Burkina Faso, followed by an away game against Guinea Bissau a week later.
