The 30-year-old sustained an instep injury during Friday's 2-0 victory over Ethiopia.

Egypt's national team director, Ibrahim Hassan, confirmed in a statement on Sunday, saying: "Medical scans have shown that Fathy will miss the match against Burkina Faso due to his injury. We had planned to prepare him for the game, but after discussions with the player, we decided to rest him."

Fathy, a key figure in Egypt's midfield, was expected to play a crucial role in the fixture. Mohanad Lasheen sustained a back injury during the game but is set to remain with the team and his situation will be reassessed juste before the game.

Coach Hossam Hassan has not called up any replacements.

However, midfielder Marwan Attia, who was suspended against Ethiopia, will now be available for selection.

Egypt currently lead Group A with 19 points, five ahead of second-placed Burkina Faso after seven rounds.

A draw against the Burkinabe side on Tuesday would secure Egypt's place in the 2026 World Cup.

The Pharaohs are aiming for their fourth World Cup appearance, having previously qualified in 1934, 1990, and 2018.
