This is Egypt’s ninth appearance at the U-20 World Cup and their first since 2013, when they exited in the group stage.

Drawn in Group A alongside hosts Chile, New Zealand, and Japan, the Young Pharaohs will face New Zealand on Tuesday before meeting Chile in their final group match on 4 October.

Coach Osama Nabih, who replaced Brazilian Rogerio Micale in January, has named a 21-man squad that includes four foreign-based players: Hertha BSC midfielder Selim Telib, Mainz’s Tebo Gabriel, FC Aarau’s Amr Khaled, and Aston Villa winger Omar Khedr.

Nabih will rely on their international experience to complement the locally based squad.

Egypt’s best result at the U-20 World Cup came in 2001, when they finished third in Argentina.
