The Egyptian team advanced to the knockout stage as one of the eight best third-placed teams from the 12 groups.

They finished third of Group E with four points, three behind leaders Venezuela and two adrift of second-placed England.

Under the tournament format, the top two teams in each group qualify automatically, along with the best eight third-placed teams.

The Egyptians opened their campaign with a 4-1 win over Haiti, followed by a 1-1 draw with Venezuela, before losing 3-0 to England on Monday.

According to the competition’s rules, Egypt were initially set to play Venezuela again in the round of 32.

However, since both teams were in the same group, FIFA assigned Egypt to face the next ranked team, Switzerland, who are eighth among the first-seeded teams.

Switzerland topped Group F with seven points after two victories over Mexico and Ivory Coast and a goalless draw against South Korea.

All round of 32 matches are scheduled for Friday.
