Egypt are considering a bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Egyptian Football Association (EFA) board member Hamada El-Sherbini said on Sunday.

Speaking to a local radio station, El-Sherbini also said he expects Egypt captain Mohamed Salah to remain part of the national team for the 2030 World Cup.

"During our meetings, we were keen to discuss the possibility of hosting the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations. We are fully capable of staging the tournament, and we have outstanding infrastructure that would enable us to successfully host the competition," El-Sherbini said.

"We are studying the matter very seriously, and the political leadership is committed to providing every possible form of support. Egypt has the capability to host both the FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Futsal World Cup, but securing the hosting rights for the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations is currently our top priority."

Egyptians are celebrating the national team's historic World Cup campaign, which saw the Pharaohs reach the knockout stage for the first time.

Their run ended in the round of 16 with a 3-2 defeat by Argentina after surrendering a two-goal lead, but the team's performances drew widespread praise.

El-Sherbini also said Salah is expected to remain with the national team through the 2030 World Cup after his performances at the 2026 tournament.

"Mohamed Salah will still be part of the Egypt national team at the 2030 FIFA World Cup. We have major challenges ahead as we strive to achieve further success for Egyptian football in the years to come," El-Sherbini said.

The next Africa Cup of Nations will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from 19 June to 17 July, 2027.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced in December that the tournament would return to even-numbered years and become a quadrennial competition beginning with the 2028 edition. CAF also said it would launch an annual African Nations League in 2029.
