Egypt national team coach Hassan Shehata won’t quit followed Mubarak’s ouster

Egyptian national coach Hassan Shehata has said he received several offers from Gulf countries to lead teams there after the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. But Shehata is staying.

“I have great achievements with the national team as I won three successive African championships” Shehata told Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jareda. “I won’t quit leading the team and I will stay until the end of my deal with the Egyptian Football Association,” he added.

“I supported Mubarak in the demonstrations to calm the sport’s atmosphere in Egypt and to let the league come back again, so I wasn’t against the protestors,” the Pharaohs’ coach announced.

Omani newspaper Al-Shabiba announced that Omani Football Association officials are in talks with Shehata to lead their national football team after Egyptian supporters demanded he be fired.

“Shehata won’t leave [and] he will complete his deal with the Egyptian FA,” Egypt national team assistant coach Hamada Sedky said.

The Pharaohs are set to face Bafana Bafana on 25 March in Round 3 of the African Cup of Nations 2012 qualifiers. Shehata’s men are in the tail of Group 7 with a single point as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sierra Leone before suffering a shock 1-0 defeat against Niger.
