After his stellar performance with Belgian team Lierse, Egyptian winger Karim Hafez has officially joined AEK Athens for one season on loan, the Greek club announced on Sunday.
Despite Lierse's relegation to the second division, the 19-year-old defender Hafez exhibited great skill with the Belgian side last season, which attracted the attention of AEK Athens management.
Lierse is owned by Egyptian businessman Magued Sami and had many Egyptian players in their squad.
The Greek side AEK Athens has an option in the player's contract to become permanent at the end of the season.
Hafez made his top flight debut last season against Waasland-Beveren in a 2-0 away defeat. He scored his first league goal with Lierse against Lommel United in a 4-2 win.
AEK Athens is one of the most successful clubs in Greek football, winning 29 national titles, including 11 Championships, 14 Greek Cups, 1 League Cup, and 3 Super Cups.
They have appeared several times in UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League competitions.
AEK is a member of the European Club Association and they were the first Greek team to compete in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in the early 90's.They are still the only Greek team to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup (1976-77).
