Kevin Nolan scored a hat-trick and Shola Ameobi got the other two goals.
At two goals down, Sunderland’s coach Steve Bruce introduced Ghanaian striker Assamoah Gyan, five minutes before the break, replacing Elmohamady in an attempt to get back into the game. But Sunderland’s hopes were dashed as Ameobi netted the third from the spot, putting the visitors with 'a mountain to climb'.
"It's pure disappointment. We've got a group of people who will have to apologise. To come here and play like that, it's not acceptable. We were naive and I don't think we handled the occasion well at all, especially in the first half," Bruce told Sky Sports after the game. After this defeat, Sunderland are now at 11th place in the league table with 12 points, while Newcastle climb to the 7th spot with 14 points.
