Ahmed Elmohamady had to replace another injured defender this week
Ahmed Elmohamady, the 23-year old Egyptian international player, was expected to be in the starting lineup, but defender Anton Ferdinand made a quick recovery to take his place in center defence alongside Ghanaian defender John Mensah while Nigerian full back Nedum Onuoha took the right-back position.
But Mensah, who has been struggling for weeks with a shoulder injury, had to quit the game after 20 minutes, forcing Sunderland coach Steve Bruce to reshuffle his already stretched defence. Onuoha moved to central defence allowing Elmohamady to slot in at the right-back position.
The former Enppi and Ghazl El-Mahala player produced a solid performance in defence, but also had a few contributions upfront. In-form striker Danny Welbeck struck with a low header in the 32nd minute to lift the Black Cats into sixth place in the league table with 27 points.
