Sunderland winger Ahmed Elmohamady revealed Monday that he owed his first goal with the club, since donning the Black Cats shirt last season, to tactician Steve Bruce, who advised him to run into the box and make use of his fine jump.
"The manager spoke to me before the game and told me to get in the box any time the ball went down the left side,” the Egyptian international told the club’s official site.
"I felt very good after the goal but I just wanted us to go on and win the game," he added. "It was a great feeling when the ball crossed the line.”
The 24-year-old Egyptian winger netted Sunderland’s equaliser in their 2-2 draw to West Brom in the Premier League’s seventh week.
"Nicklas put in a great cross for me to score a very good goal. There was a lot of pace on the cross, so all I had to do was direct it,” Elmohamady stated. "I got across the defender and managed to put it in."
The former ENPPI midfielder has expressed his frustration with his side’s draw but feels that gaining a point is better than losing three.
"I see it as a good point after conceding those two goals in the first five minutes," he said, adding, "We came back so well and were unlucky not to win.”
The Pharaoh’s star praised his team’s herculean comeback: "Even very big teams, Barcelona and Real Madrid, find it hard to come back from conceding two goals so early, but we managed to do it.”
