Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has explained why he pulled Egypt midfielder Mohamed Elneny off the field before the break during the 2-0 loss to Southampton in the English League Cup on Wednesday.

Wenger revealed that Elneny hadn't been feeling well prior to kick-off—that it was not due to injury.

"Elneny was sick before the game and I could see after 10 minutes that he wasn't right," Wenger said in the post-game press conference.

"He has no injury but he has a stomach problem," The Arsenal manager said.

Wenger is hoping the 24-year-old will recover in time for Arsenal's trip to West Ham on Saturday.
