Sunderland, where Egyptian wing-back Ahmed Elmohamady plays, have fired manager Steve Bruce after the northeast club slipped to 16th in the Premier League with just one win from their last eight matches

Bruce brought in players including Manchester United duo John O’Shea and Wes Brown during the offseason but the team is just two points above the relegation zone after losing to last-place Wigan at the weekend.

Sunderland chairman Ellis Short says “results this season have simply not been good enough and I feel the time is right to make a change.”

Assistant manager Eric Black will take charge of the team until Sunderland finds a permanent replacement.

Bruce initially brought Elmohamady from Egyptian side ENPPI on a season-long loan in the summer of 2010.

The Egyptian international impressed in his maiden season in the elite Premier League to earn a permanent stay at Sunderland in the close season but he is struggling to maintain his regular place in the team’s starting line-up this term.
