Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says midfielder Mohamed Elneny should be fit to play for Egypt at the World Cup.

Elneny hurt his left ankle and was carried off on a stretcher during Arsenal’s Premier League game against West Ham on Sunday.

Wenger says Elneny “is out certainly for the rest of the season (for Arsenal) ... but I think he will be available to Egypt at the World Cup.”

On Monday, Mohamed Fayez, assistant coach of the Egyptian national team, said that Elneny will take no more than three weeks to recover from the injury.

"I have just contacted Elneny after running scans. Thank God, his injury is minor and will sideline him for only three weeks... He will be in the World Cup," said Argentinean coach Hector Cuper's assistant through his Facebook page.

"Thank you for all the love you showed, either in the field or outside it," the 26-year old player wrote on his twitter account on Monday.

"Your support will make me want to heal faster, and try my best to come back to play along with my mates in the Arsenal, and assist my national team," he added.

The former Basel midfielder is a key member of Egypt's squad. He played a vital role in helping the team reach the African Cup of Nations final in early 2017, scoring in the 2-1 defeat by eventual champions Cameroon.

He was also ever-present in Egypt's World Cup qualifying campaign as the Pharaohs topped their group to end a 28-year wait for an appearance in football's most prestigious tournament.

Egypt opens its Group A campaign on June 15 against Uruguay.
