The Egyptian striker makes a surprise return to his former club's training ground

Egyptian striker Ahmed Hossam “Mido” has returned to Middlesbrough, but only to train with the English club, according to English media.

Northern Echo, the Daily Mail and Gazette live newspapers reported on Wednesday that Mido is training at Boro’s Rocklife Park headquarters.

The 28-year-old joined Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam last summer from Middlesbrough, but his tenure was a brief one.

Despite the fact that his current contract runs until next June, Mido decided last week to leave Ajax, where he made his name in the early 2000s.

He had limited opportunities under Jol and his successor Frank De Boer, who has been surprised by the decision of the nomadic hitman.

“His departure surprised me. I have expressed my confidence in him. We had in mind that our number 9 became fit," De Boer was quoted as saying by Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf on Monday.

Mido, who has also played for Italy’s Roma and English side Tottenham Hotspur among several other sides in Europe, is seeking a new club during the current transfer window.

Spanish duo Deportivo De La Coruna and Espanyol are reportedly interested in acquiring Mido’s services. His boyhood club Zamalek of Egypt has also made no secret of their desire to land him.
