Liverpool's Egyptian star winger Mohamed Salah says his future is in the hands of the Premier League giants, hinting that joining Real Madrid or Barcelona could be possible in the future.
“That's a tough one, but right now I can say that everything is in the club's hands. Of course I want to break records here and, I repeat, every record in the club, but everything's in the hands of the club,” Salah said in an interview with Spanish newspaper AS, published on Saturday.
Since joining the Reds from Italy’s AS Roma in 2017, Salah has made his best start to a season, netting 11 goals in 13 Premier League games so far. He also scored three goals in six games of the UEFA Champions League 2020/2021 season.
The 28-year-old winger played an instrumental role in Liverpool’s success in the past three seasons, helping the team to win the Champions League title in 2018 and then the Premier League last season.
"I think I have broken a few records, I wish I could break all the records for the club, that would be nice,” he said.
“I think over the last few seasons we've been doing good in the Champions League. I think also in the Premier League, as well. We had a good chance to win them both. Last season we were unlucky in the Champions League. We will fight for both this year, that's from my point of view that we will fight for both,” he added.
Salah, who won the Premier League Golden Boot for the competition’s top scorer twice in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons, believes he still has a lot to do at Liverpool.
“I don't know. I don't want to say that for now. But, yeah, I'm always trying to score goals to help the team to win the game. There's a good chance to be a third time top scorer again. But the most important thing is to win something, to win the big trophies with the team. That's the most important thing,” he said when asked if he can win a third Golden Boot in the Premier League this year.
Real or Braca move
After shining in the Premier League in the past seasons, the former Chelsea player Salah was repeatedly linked with a move for both Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona and the Pharaohs star leaves the door open for that possibility in the future.
“I think Madrid and Barcelona are top clubs... We never know what is going to happen in the future, but right now I'm focused on winning the Premier League and the Champions League again with my club,” said Salah when asked if he could rule out playing for either of the Spanish duo.
Among the best in the world
Salah hailed Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona star Lionel Messi saying what they did for football was unbelievable; refusing to mention definite names as their successors.
When asked if he considers himself as one of the best players at the moment, Salah said: “Yeah, absolutely, yeah. [laughs] When I look back on my career, I want to feel that I achieved something special, that I did something special. So that's why I'm trying to give my best in every game and every year for the club, and for myself as well,”.
