Arsenal have reportedly started negotiations with Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Elneny to extend his contract with the Gunners after his superb performance in the latest games with the team.

The 29-year-old midfielder was very convincing after his superb performance in the latest four games, which ended with a 4-2 win over Chelsea, 3-1 win over Manchester United, 2-1 win over West Ham, and 2-1 win over Leeds United.

Elneny’s current contract with the club is due to conclude by the end of the current season.

Reports in British media said on Monday that Arsenal’s management are in talks with Elneny to put pen to papers on a new contract, as the player revealed that he is open to sign a new contract with the Premier League club even if he does not receive the needed guarantees that he would be playing on a regular basis.

Moreover, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta extoled the performance of Elneny during the previous games, saying that he is one of the most important players on the team.

“He (Elneny) is a phenomenal person, and then you have to judge the footballer as well that sometimes does not get probably the credit that he deserves,” Arteta told a press conference ahead of the 3-1 win over Manchester United last month.

The Egyptian midfielder — who joined Arsenal from Swiss side Basel in January 2016 — was close to joining Turkish giants Galatasaray last summer, but the English Premier League side refused the offer, according to Sky Sports.

Elneny has made 144 appearances with Arsenal in all competitions since his arrival, scoring five goals and providing 10 assists. He has played 14 games this season.

Arsenal are fourth on the English Premier League table with 66 points, 4 points over fifth placed Tottenham, as the two sides are in a race to book a ticket to the next season of the UEFA Champions League.
