Elneny's deal was due to expire at the end of the season but the Gunners rewarded him for his recent fine displays with a fresh contract that will keep him at the Emirates until at least the summer of 2023, with an option for a further 12 months.

The 29-year-old joined Arsenal from Swiss side Basel in 2016 and helped the club win the Community Shield in 2017 and 2020 as well as reach the UEFA Europa League final in 2019.

He also had a loan spell with Turkish side Besiktas in the 2019-20 season.

"Almost 7 years with Arsenal but they don't seem to be enough. I'm still learning, I'm still growing, and I want to do so much more for the team and the club I love," Elneny said on Twitter.

"I'm very happy, proud and grateful for renewing my contract with Arsenal.. I'm staying home."

Reports had repeatedly linked Elneny with a summer move away from the club as he struggled for first-team opportunities, only to be revitalized in the latter stages of the season.

He started the last seven Premier League games for Arsenal, putting in some commanding displays in the heart of midfield as the team battled for a top-four finish. They eventually finished fifth to miss out on a place in the European Champions League.

"Mo is a really important part of the team. He brings endless energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the team and is loved by everyone," Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta said.

"He's an important player for us on and off the pitch, a real role model to our younger players and I'm delighted he's staying."

Elneny has made 147 appearances since joining Arsenal, scoring five goals and providing 10 assists.
