Liverpool’s 0-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday marked a painful end to Salah's season after he also lost the Premier League title with Liverpool and the African Nations Cup final with Egypt.
“I cannot express in words how much we wanted to bring that trophy back to Liverpool but in the end we couldn’t,” Salah wrote on his Twitter account Thursday.
“I cannot thank the fans enough for your support. It has been a very long season but a part of me wishes the next one starts again tomorrow,” Salah added
Thousands of fans lined the streets of the city as double cup-winners Liverpool returned home for an open-top bus parade on Sunday that took place amid a flood of conflicting emotions.
The 27-year-old, Salah gained the Premier League's Golden Boot after scoring 23 goals, on level with Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-Min.
He was also named the Men's Footballer of the Year for 2021/22 by the Football Writers' Association (FWA).
“Being recognised by the fans and by the sports journalists in the same season is something special that I will never forget,” Salah said.
“I would however give all those personal awards up for a chance at replaying that final, but that is not how football works.” The Egyptian star concluded.
The Egyptian winger finished the Premier League with the biggest number of assists, having created 13 goals in another remarkable campaign.
Salah, who joined Liverpool from AS Roma in the summer of 2017, also won the Golden Boot in 2018 and 2019.
