Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta praised his Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Elneny for making an unexpected quick return from injury after he took part in the 1-0 win over FC Zurich in Europa League on Thursday.

“He [Elneny] was really good. He’s been out for eight weeks, we expected him to be out for 12 weeks, he had an amazing recovery,” Arteta told the post game’s press conference.

“He’s a guy that has been pushing everybody around the training ground to be ready as quick as possible and today, I think he competed really well,” the Arsenal boss added.

The 30-year-old Elneny returned to action with the Gunners for the first time in more than two months after recovering from a muscle injury that he sustained in Arsenal's Premier League game against Fulham on 27 August.

The Gunners currently lie in first place in the Premier League after 12 rounds with 31 points, two points ahead of second place Manchester City.

The Egypt international is set to start the game against FC Zurich in the Europa League in london on Thursday.

Elneny, who was granted a one-year contract extension in the summer, has made 148 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing 10 assists.

Arsenal has secured their place in the next round as they top the Group A with 12 points, two points ahead of PSV Eindhoven and eight off third placed Bodo/Glimt.
