Egyptian international winger Mohamed Salah further cements his status as one of modern football’s icons. His two-goal display in Liverpool’s 3–1 comeback win over Southampton on Saturday saw him match Sergio Aguero’s record of 184 Premier League goals by a foreign player, 182 for Liverpool and two for Chelsea.

Despite Southampton’s early shock opener, the Reds never lost their resolve.

Darwin Nunez’s equalizer was swiftly countered by Salah’s composed second-half penalties, which not only secured the victory but also propelled Liverpool closer to a potential league title.

“I knew about the record, but I didn’t think about it while playing,” Salah said after the game. “Sergio was a legend for this league, so to equal him is an honor. But the win mattered most—we keep fighting for every trophy.”

The 32-year-old forward is enjoying a career-defining season, since he has registered 27 goals and 17 assists in just 29 Premier League games, 44 goal involvements that tie Thierry Henry (2002/03) and Erling Haaland (2022/23) for the most in a 38-game season.

Salah’s ever-growing legacy

Moreover, Salah has set a new personal best, a club record and equals the 38-game season record, surpassing his own milestone of 42 goals (2017/18) and Luis Suarez’s 43 goals in the 2013/14 season.

Salah now just needs four more combined goals and assists to break the all-time record of 47, achieved by Andy Cole in 1993-94 and Alan Shearer in 1994-95, both of which were 42-game seasons.

Across all competitions, he has amassed 32 goals and 22 assists in 41 appearances, missing only four matches despite international duties.

Salah’s relentless consistency has also seen him climb Liverpool’s all-time scoring charts.

With 243 goals in 390 appearances, he has surpassed Gordon Hodgson to become the club’s third-highest scorer, trailing only Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285).

His home form is equally impressive, as he has contributed in 13 of 14 league games at Anfield—a run that draws comparisons with Shearer’s famed 15-game home streak in 1996/97.

Despite swirling Saudi Pro League rumors, Salah remains fixated on Liverpool’s unprecedented quadruple bid. “My heart is here, but football’s future is unpredictable,” he said cryptically last month.

With 10 league games left, he now eyes surpassing Aguero outright to become the —potentially as soon as 2 April against Everton.

From his explosive debut at Liverpool to his current record-shattering form, Salah has silenced critics and reaffirmed his place among the elite.

Each match adds to his enduring legacy—a legacy that not only fuels the ambitions of Liverpool but also fills Egypt with national pride.

As he continues his pursuit of further milestones and potential Ballon d’Or glory, the Egyptian forward’s influence on the game remains as profound as ever.
