Egypt striker Mostafa Mohamed said on Friday that he boycotted Nantes’ Ligue 1 match against Montpellier due to religious beliefs that prevent him from taking part in the league’s anti-homophobia campaign.

The Egyptian international posted an Instagram statement explaining his decision, which comes as the Ligue 1 dedicates this weekend’s fixtures to its annual anti-homophobia campaign.

Players are expected to wear shirts with rainbow-coloured numbers supporting the initiative.

“I do not feel comfortable speaking publicly, but today I feel the need to clarify my approach without seeking to provoke debate,” Mohamed wrote.

“Some values deeply rooted in my origins and my faith make it difficult for me to participate in this initiative,” he added.

The 27-year-old said his decision should not be seen as a rejection or a judgment but as a personal choice.

“It is simply loyalty to what builds me. I hope this decision will be received calmly and with understanding,” he added.

It is the third consecutive season Mohamed has missed matches related to the campaign.

According to French sports daily L’Équipe, the club will fine Mohamed, and the amount will be donated to a charitable association.

On Thursday, Nantes coach Antoine Kombouaré said that the striker missed training due to minor muscular pain.

Mohamed joined Nantes on a permanent deal in 2023 after a loan spell from Galatasaray. He has scored 25 goals in 112 appearances in all competitions.
