The 34-year-old left Anfield as a free agent after nine seasons in which he scored 257 goals in 442 appearances, becoming the club's third-highest all-time scorer. He won the Premier League title twice and the Champions League once during his spell on Merseyside.
Salah's arrival in Turkey comes after an earlier move to Besiktas broke down over financial terms. Besiktas director Onder Özen told a press conference that talks with the player's representatives had stalled once discussions turned to the financial details of the deal, adding that negotiations had been shelved for the time being.
Trabzonspor, who finished third in the Trendyol Süper Lig last season and qualified for the Europa League play-offs, confirmed they had opened negotiations with the forward. The club said in a statement that talks had begun to sign the free agent, while chairman Ertugrul Dogan said Salah was due in Istanbul for medical checks before travelling to Trabzon.
Reports in the Turkish press said the contract was worth around 34 million euros over two years, about 17 million euros per season. Salah is reported to have existing ties to Turkey, including property in Bodrum.
The move follows a difficult final campaign for Salah in England. After winning the Premier League Player of the Season award, the Golden Boot, and the Playmaker Award in 2024/25, his output dropped to seven league goals and seven assists in 27 appearances last season. The campaign also included limited Champions League minutes and public friction with then-manager Arne Slot.
Salah's Liverpool exit followed his participation with Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, where the Pharaohs reached the last 16 for the first time since 1934 before losing 3-2 to Argentina. He scored once and set up two goals in five starts for his country in the tournament.
Trabzonspor, coached by Fatih Tekke, are looking to add attacking firepower to a side that scored 61 league goals last season. The team relies on high possession and frequent crosses from wide areas, a style that suits Salah's tendency to cut inside from the right.
The transfer would rank among the biggest signings in Trabzonspor's history, with questions remaining in Turkish football over how the club, which has historically operated close to break-even in the transfer market, will finance the deal. Turkish Airlines is among the club's sponsors.
