Bani Yas forward Mohamed Zidan
Mohamed Zidan was guilty of a glaring miss as Bani Yas slumped to a late 1-0 defeat by Al-Wasl in the Emirates League Cup competition on Tuesday.
Uruguayan forward Emiliano Alfaro scored the winner with two minutes remaining to punish Bani Yas for their wastefulness.
Egypt forward Zidan, who is producing some fine displays with Bani Yas after recovering from a hamstring injury, squandered a golden opportunity to score two minutes before the break.
Al-Wasl keeper failed to handle a tame cross as the ball slipped into the path of Zidan, whose shot deflected wide off a defender with the goal gaping.
The defeat leaves Bani Yas second from bottom in their group with three points from three games.
Zidan has scored two goals in as many league appearances for Bani Yas.
Egypt coach Bob Bradley hinted recently that Zidan might return to the national team fold if he was “technically and physically” ready.
The 30-year-old was rebuked by the American boss after opting to skip an African Nations Cup qualifier against Central Africa last year to discuss a move to an unnamed Chinese club.
