Basel forward Mohamed Salah heaped praise on former Egypt and Ahly star Mohamed Abou-Treika, saying he has learned a lot from the classy playmaker who has recently quit football after a remarkable career.

The in-form Salah forged an effective partnership with Abou-Treika during Egypt's World Cup qualifying run, with both men combining on many occasions to unsettle opposing backlines.

"I've been lucky to play with you, I learned from you a lot, so far I cannot imagine playing without you!" Salah said on Twitter on Wednesday, posting photos for him and Abou-Treika with Egypt's national team jersey.

"Thank you for everything and I wish you the best in your next step," he added.

Abou-Treika decided to retire after his hopes of reaching the World Cup were demolished following Egypt's 6-1 loss to Ghana in the first leg of the qualifying playoff.

The 35-year-old, who joined Ahly from Tersana in January 2004, was an inspiration for both Ahly and Egypt, heralding a golden age with 22 trophies won with the Red Devils, including five Champions League titles and a bronze medal at the 2006 Club World Cup.

He also won the Africa-based Player of the Year Award in 2006, 2008 and 2012, with a 2013 nomination for the same title. The winner will be announced this month.

Earlier last week, Salah also paid tribute to Abou-Treika following his retirement announcement.

"There has been a big harmony between us and it is because of him that I am the top scorer of the qualifiers (2014 World Cup qualifiers)," the Basel frontman said.

"He is a player who makes the mission of his teammates very easy. He is always close to you, he knows how to find you to give you the ball. He has always been supportive of his teammates. He is a great player and has played a big role in the National team on and off the pitch."
