Sudanese giants Al-Hilal have terminated the contract of Brazilian coach, Paulo Campos after a bust-up with the referee of their away game against AS Vita club from DR Congo on Sunday night.
Hilal lost the game 2-1 because of a penalty deep in stoppage time which sparked the fury of Campos who ran onto the pitch – followed by his players – and allegedly attempted to assault match officials for prolonging the game and issuing a penalty kick.
“The board decided to terminate the contract of coach Campos and he has been informed of his release. The coach is supposed to be an instructor and should behave in an acceptable way. He did the opposite when he ran towards the referee – followed by players who see him as a role model – until he was stopped by the police,” Al-Hilal secretary general Emad Al-Tayeb was quoted as saying on the club’s Facebook page.
“This action will have severe consequences on Al-Hilal and that is why we terminated his contract and his assistant Al-Tag Mahgoub will be in charge of our next game against TP Mazembe."
“We also filed an official complaint to the CAF regarding the actions of the referee and the stoppage time,” he concluded.
The board had an emergency meeting late on Sunday before sacking their 57-year old tactician who was hired early last May.
Al-Hilal are third in Group A with four points three behind co-leaders AS Vita Club and TP Mazembe both from DR Congo.
