Tunisia’s Club Africain qualified for the Confederation Cup group stage despite suffering a 3-1 loss to Kenyan outfit Sofapaka on Saturday.

Africain went through with a slender 4-3 aggregate victory, having defeated Sofapaka 3-0 in the first leg in Tunisia.

The visitors took the lead midway through the first half, thanks to goal from burly Chad striker Ezechiel Ndouasel which left Sofapaka with an uphill climb.

The Kenyans equalized just before halftime via a strike from Kayoumbo before hitting two late goals through John Baraza and John Onami, which were not enough to prevent them from exiting the Confederation Cup.

Club Africain were initially playing in the Champions League but had to settle for a place in Africa’s secondary club competition after their last-16 match against Sudan’s Al-Hilal was abandoned due to a pitch invasion.

Elsewhere, Libyan side Ittihad were eliminated after losing 1-0 to Sunshine Stars in a one-legged game played in Nigeria due to the ongoing civil war in the Arab country.

Sunshine’s compatriots Kaduna United also booked a place among the last eight after overturning a 1-0 first-leg deficit to crush Algeria’s ES Setif 3-0.

Setif played with nine men for long periods following the dismissals of defender Mohamed Yekhlef and striker Abdelmoumene Djabou either side of the interval.
