Werder Bremen defender Papy Djilobodji has apologized for a throat-slitting gesture that got him banned and fined.

The German football federation sports tribunal this week gave Djilobodji, who is on loan from Chelsea, a two-match ban and fined him 15,000 euros ($16,700) for ''crass unsportsmanlike conduct.''

Djilobodji ran his finger across his throat to Mainz midfielder Pablo De Blasis, who was lying on the pitch after a clash during their 1-1 draw last Saturday in the Bundesliga.

The Senegal international on Friday issued an apology through his club to De Blasis and ''all football fans,'' saying the gesture ''belongs neither on the pitch nor outside.''

Djilobodji will miss another match at the end of the ban because of accumulated yellow cards.
