DR Congo and West Bromwich Albion player Youssouf Mulumbu sent a letter to his country’s football federation on Thursday announcing his international retirement in order to focus on his club career.

“It is with regret that I announce my decision to retire from international football effective immediately,” he wrote in his letter, which was published on the website of Congolese radio station Radio Okapi.

“I took the decision after long discussions with my family and medical advisers. Now I think I will have the opportunity to extend my professional career, which is the guarantee for me and my family’s financial security.

“It was a very hard decision for me. I wish you and the team great success in the future. Best wishes,” he concluded.

According to national teams coordinator Theobald Binamungu, the federation (Fecofa) has accepted the decision.

Mulumbu, 24, made his debut with the Leopards in 2008. He first announced his decision to end his international career in 2010 due to “the lack of professionalism of Fecofa officials,” although he eventually returned to the squad last March.

This time around, however, his decision to retire appears to be final.
