Tunisian side Esperance struck late to move top of their African Champions League group with a 2-1 away win over South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday.

The visitors took a sixth-minute lead when Taha Khenissi ghosted behind the defence to latch onto a through pass and beat the keeper at the near post with a powerful shot.

Sibusiso Vilakazi brought Sundowns level on 21 minutes with a simple tap-in into an empty net following a swift move but Esperance had the last laugh.

In the 90th minute, Esperance were awarded a penalty and Khenissi sent the keeper the wrong way to give his side a precious win.

They moved top of Group C with seven points, three ahead of Sundowns after three matches.

Ethiopia’s Saint George, who are third on two points, face Vita Club in the other group game on Sunday.
