A Congolese defender playing for Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala was hit by a banana while leaving the game after his team's 1-0 defeat to Lokomotiv Moscow on Sunday in the fifth match day of the Russian Premier League.

Christopher Samba, a 27-year-old defender, picked it up and wanted to send it back.

"I hope this incident will be an example of a bad attitude for the children who came to watch the game," the former Sedan and Blackburn player was quoted as saying on France Football.

Lokomotiv President Olga Smorodskaya has played down any racist claims, saying that "there have been no incidents in the stadium."

Samba isn’t the first victim of such an incident, as teammate Roberto Carlos also had bananas thrown at him in Saint Petersburg and Samara.
