The Confederation of African Football (CAF) reveals the qualification system for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed on Thursday the system for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which will be held in South Africa, ending all speculation concerning the qualification rules.

In a statement on their official website, the CAF confirmed that the 14 victorious teams from the preliminary round will join the 16 finalists from the last Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2012).

The 30 teams will play the final round of qualifications on a knockout system, to determine the 15 finalists additionaly to the host country South Africa.

According to the CAF statement, the 30 teams will be divided in two pools, according to their results in the last three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

The winners of CAN get seven points, finalists get five, semi-finalists get three, teams that reached the quarter finals  get two and other teams get a single point. The CAN 2012 has a coefficient three the CAN 2010 coefficient two and the CAN 2008 coefficient one.
